Book Summary
To mark the thirtieth anniversary of the Newbery Honor–winning classic Hatchet, this special edition celebrates one of the most powerful survival stories ever written. Featuring a new introduction and commentary by author Gary Paulsen, pen-and-ink illustrations, and a durable, water-resistant cover, this edition honors a novel beloved by generations of readers and recognized by PBS’s The Great American Read as one of America’s favorite books.
The story follows thirteen-year-old Brian Robeson, who is traveling by small plane to visit his father for the first time since his parents’ divorce. Burdened by the secret knowledge of his mother’s infidelity, Brian’s journey takes a terrifying turn when the pilot suffers a fatal heart attack and the plane crashes into the Canadian wilderness. Brian survives—but finds himself completely alone, armed with nothing but the clothes he’s wearing, a torn windbreaker, and a hatchet his mother gave him as a gift.
Overwhelmed by fear and despair, Brian must learn to survive from scratch. As days turn into weeks, he teaches himself how to build shelter, hunt and fish, forage for food, and make fire. When a devastating tornado destroys his campsite, Brian finds the strength to begin again, stronger and wiser than before.
After fifty-four days in the wild, Brian is finally rescued. He returns home transformed—having gained resilience, patience, and a deeper understanding of himself, his parents, and the meaning of survival.
